Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadephia, 1890, Man Ray, as he later came to be known as, was an American artist whose work spanned the 20th century. Although perhaps best known for his avant-garde black and white photography, he was active in many visual arts, including sculpture, performance art, and especially painting. Like many avant-garde artists, he received little recognition or appreciation for his work at the time, but they have been slowly growing in popularity since.

His early paintings show a marked inclination for 19th-century European Masters. Cubism proved to be his opportunity to break with traditionalism and experiment. After moving to New York in 1912 and becoming involved with its art community, Man Ray’s work began to focus on showing movement despite the inherently static nature of a painting. For example, his 1916 painting “The Rope Dancer Accompanies Herself with Shadows”, great care was paid to the repetitive positions of the dancer’s skirts. As Man Ray continued to explore experimental art, he gradually moved away from painting. At first he merely experimented with different materials-for example, his 1919 painting “Aerograph” was done with airbrush on glass-he eventually left the canvas altogether and moved into experimental art in the sculpture and photography mediums.

Man Ray’s first sculpture, titled “Self-Portrait” was exhibited in 1916. He worked for a while with “found” or “readymade” sculpture-objects chosen by the artist and displayed, with very little modification, as a sculpture. Other sculptures stressed form over subject, such as his sculpture “Enigma of Isidore Ducasse”, in which cloth is draped around an unknown object and tied with rope. In 1920, he assisted fellow avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp designing and building one of the first pieces of kinetic art in which glass plates were rotated by a motor. In the same year, Man Ray, Duchamp, and Katherine Dreier opened the Socit Anonyme, effectively the first museum of modern art in the United States.

Man Ray began working with photography in 1918. Although he was to become a renowned fashion and portrait photographer, it was the potential of the camera for experimental artistic images that he proceeded to develop. It represented a further step away from static, two-dimensional painting, and he experimented with mechanical and photographic ways of creating images. After moving to the artistic community of Montparnasse in Paris, France, Man Ray spent the next twenty years redefining the art of photography. Man Ray juxtaposed objects, subjects, backgrounds, and lighting in his photographs to alter the meaning and message it would at first glance appear to be sending to society. The Surrealist artist Mret Oppenheim posed for Man Ray in 1934 for a famous series of photographs, in which she stood nude next to a printing press. Later, Ray revisited and reinvented the photographic technique of “solarization”. He developed new techniques of using photograms, which he named after himself, calling them “rayographs”. During his life, he also directed several short avant-garde experimental films.

In 1976, Man Ray died in Paris. He was buried in the famous Montparnasse cemetery. His tombstone bears the inscription “Unconcerned, but not indifferent”. In 1999, ARTnews magazine rated him among the 25 most influential artists during the 20th century due to his exploration, expansion, and blending of the artistic disciplines of painting, sculpture, and black and white photography.

by Ben Johnson

If you have access to a flower garden, you probably want to make some nice flower photos. And most likely you will choose a nice, warm, sunny day to take out your camera.

But wait! That bright sunlight is actually not the best for showing your flowers at their very best. Rather, try a slightly overcast day. The softer light on such a day is easier to handle.

There are several more ways to make your flower photos stand out. Here are some methods that professional photographers use to make their pictures look good:

Get rid of a distracting background by shading it - take a piece of cardboard or some similar stuff and hold it so it casts a shadow on that background you prefer to see less of.

Want more light on that special flower? Then take some object with a reflective surface like a mirror, and use that to shine extra light on your subject. The pro’s use this method all the time.

Another thing you can do if you do not want to wait for the clouds is to make your own. Use a sheet of semi-opaque plastic, or a piece of white cloth. Secure this to a coat hanger made of wire. (The hanger should be formed into the shape of a square to make it serve better as support.) Then take this object and place it above the flower so that it provides some shade from the sunlight.

Using the sun as a back lightning for flower photos can prove to be quite interesting. In order to get the best effect, you can try placing the sun right behind the flower. This is not an easy task, but once you get the hang of it, then you can use it to your advantage. Some types of flowers will look semi-transparent when lit from behind.

Around noontime, the sun is at its peak and actually producing the most dull type of light for picture-making. Try taking out your camera at dawn… or near sunset. You will be amazed at the difference.

Nowadays every camera has a zoom lens. Use that zoom function to make your flowers stand out better, by “zooming in”. This tends to give you less problems with distracting stuff in the background, since it enlarges your subject relative to what is further away.

Just because you may not be a professional photographer, doesn’t mean that you can’t capture your subject the way they do it. It will take practice and patience to get the photos to look their very best, but since you can take a lot of pictures with a digital camera at no extra cost you will be able to experiment until you get everything right.

by Michel Blunt

It really isn’t difficult to learn the basics of photography. Although if you are used to using an old film camera there are some differences with the modern digital cameras you will want to know about.

Taking advantage of these differences with the new digital format is really going to help you. And the truth is this stuff really isn’t rocket science.

Freedom to take as many pictures as you like

With the digital format we are now hardly limited at all when it comes to the number of photos we can take. Never again will you have to pay for a whole load of prints that you didn’t even want.

It is a good idea though to make sure you keep your photo collection tidy by removing or editing those photos that just don’t quite cut it or are too much the same. This really is essential since otherwise you will probably never find your good photos.

Ways to save space

One of the great things about the digital format is its flexibility, you can easily resave digital images in lower resolutions and more. Lowering image resolution is a great way to save on storage space.

You will only need a high resolution for your photographs if you need a crisp image for a large printed photograph. If you are only going to use the pictures online or with a computer, you can use a lower resolution setting.

Your camera may be able to save images directly in lower resolutions. If your camera can do this the feature could be used to save space on your camera’s memory card and so give you access to a large number of photos on the same card.

You should increase your storage space because eventually, you will run out. This will instantly bring your level of fun down if you were planning to take pictures and you cannot because you just ran out of memory.

Save on Battery Use

Healthy batteries for your camera is simply essential. Just like with running out of space running out of battery power can be a real nightmare.

Save on your batteries by turning off the LCD display when it is not in use. You can also turn off the flash and continuous auto focus to reduce these items from using up your batteries.

Having spare batteries with you at all times is very important, whether you’re camera has its own special power pack or it takes rechargeable batteries, make sure you have several spares with you.

Don’t worry about your lack of experience, if you take some time to educate yourself and practice with your digital camera you will find it really easy to improve. Soon you will be taking photographs you are really proud of, if you aren’t already.

You will learn that it is easy to go from digital photography for beginners to the next level of photography, as you get more comfortable with your digital camera.

Fear of the dusty sensor

by Dan Feildman

Fear of the dusty sensor

If you’re shooting with a digital SLR and start to notice dark specks appearing in your photos, don’t get all short of breath: this is not caused by ectoplasm seeping in from the spirit world. It’s just dust. When you change lenses on an SLR, dust can get inside the camera and settle on the sensor, darkening little spots in the pictures you take.

You might have a camera that has a built-in sensor-dusting function, but most cameras still require a careful manual cleaning.

1. Purchase a self-cleaning SLR.

Dust specks on the camera sensor can cause dark spots on your photographs. A hint: when looking at the photographs you might need to have them enlarged in order to see the dust specks.

Olympus’s E1 and Evolt E-300 SLRs have what the company calls a Supersonic Wave Filter built in. Every time you turn the camera on or activate the filter, it vibrates the sensor to shake dust off. The dust is then collected on adhesive strips along the sides of the sensor. In our experience, this system works pretty well. It’s a pity other manufacturers don’t offer something similar.

2. Clean your camera with care. If you don’t have an Olympus SLR (or even if you do but are in a very dusty environment), sooner or later you’ll have to clean the sensor. If you’re nervous about doing it yourself, you can send it to the manufacturer for a professional cleaning. However, that’s not a very practical or affordable way to handle the situation every time a new little spot shows up. Although you should take the utmost care, the best solution is probably to clean the dust out yourself.

Most sensors have a protective glass covering and you want to be careful not to scratch or damage it as there’s a good chance the manufacturer’s warranty will not cover repairs. Be careful about what you put inside your camera. Also, never blow compressed air inside the camera. Compressed air uses propellants that can leave a residue and create a film over your sensor.

You want to find products that are made specifically for sensor cleaning, usually through any retailer who sells digital cameras. You can find a variety of products available from manufacturers such as Photographic Solutions and Visible Dust. Speck Grabber from Kinetronics’ is a great product as it has a little light built in which is helpful for getting at particular bits of debris. If you own a Kodak camera you can use the Kodak sensor-cleaning kit which also comes with its own detailed instructions on how to clean camera sensors.

When you’re ready to clean the sensor, put the camera into sensor-cleaning mode so that the sensor is exposed (check the manual about how to do this with your particular model) and remove the lens. You can use a bulb blower to blow dust off the sensor; just make sure you hold the camera up so that the dust falls out instead of settling inside again. Follow the instructions of the cleaning product you’ve chosen. Usually this will involve carefully swabbing the surface of the protective glass over the sensor.

To make sure that you have gotten rid of all the dust you can take a picture of a blank wall or piece of paper. Look at it at full size on a computer monitor and see if you can detect any remaining specks.

In a complete reversal of what Windows and Macintosh users might expect, Adobe CS4 includes 64-bit support for the Windows platform, but not for Mac.

by David Peters

In a complete reversal of what Windows and Macintosh users might expect, Adobe CS4 includes 64-bit support for the Windows platform, but not for Mac.

According to John Nack, Adobe’s Photoshop product manager, Mac OS X users unfortunately won’t get 64-bit support until CS5, the next release of the graphics editing software.

Nack attributes this dichotomy to the decision Apple made last year to stop development of 64-bit support for Carbon, a move which he says took Adobe and third-party developers by surprise. Adobe did make CS3 Intel-compatible, but has maintained Carbon as its core architecture.

Nack wrote, in a recent blog entry, “At the WWDC show last June, [Adobe and] other developers learned that Apple had decided to stop their Carbon 64 efforts. This means that 64-bit Mac apps need to be written to use Cocoa [instead of] Carbon”.

“We’ll need to rewrite large parts of Photoshop and its plug-ins (potentially affecting over a million lines of code) to move it from Carbon to Cocoa.”

According to Nack, 64-bit support in Photoshop offers huge speed advantages for those who typically work with large images on systems with RAM of about 32GB and up. Even normal users will possibly see a performance increase of 8% to 12% when using the 64-bit version of Adobe’s software compared to 32-bit.

Regrettably this means Mac OS X users will not be able to take advantage of the performance gains in CS4; those who do manipulate massive images on their Mac’s may need to use Windows until CS5 is released further down the road.

A Note: Ironically, when Photoshop was initially released back in 1988, the software was available for Macintosh only. The product didn’t even ship for Microsoft’s platform until 1992, when Adobe ported Photoshop 2.0 to Windows.

If you are looking to host your photos or share your videos, the opportunities to do so, are just huge today. All you need to do is, upload your photograph and link the image hosting site to your personal website. Once the image is hosted, it can be accessed globally by your family, friends and relatives. You can choose from Speedimg.com, Photobucket, Smugmug, Ofoto, Funtigo or hundreds of other free image hosting sites.

You could easily start your own wallpaper website or celebrity website and host all the images on a free image hosting website like speedimg.com.

When you upload your images to the free image hosting website, you will recieve links to where they are hosted on that website. You can then send the links to friends and family very easily, and in most cases the image size you upload and the picture quality will remain the same as the image stored on your computer.

Theres one good thing about free image hosting websites, and that is that they are usually on a dedicated server on there own. This means that there is no other sites on the server slowing the free image hosting website down, so the uploading of images and the displaying of images will be very fast.

When you want to upload your images and share them with the world, you go along to a free image hosting website and locate the images on your harddrive or camera etc and press the upload button, and thats it. You will then get links to share with your friends and family, or to put the pictures onto your website or blogs.

Got a mobile phone with pictures on it, or a digital camera with pictures you want to share with the world? Well, uploading from these devices directly to the image hosting website is a breeze..

You can also upload photos through a micro chip or CD-ROM. If you have a digi- cam, you can verily go ahead with that as well.

Some free image hosting websites will also have stats that will show you how many times a phot was viewed and some can even tell you more about who just downloaded your image, maybe you have an admirer?

Free image hosting services also provide you with information on who just downloaded your photograph through the web. So if there is web paparazzo who loves you, you will always get to know.

Free image hosting sites also offer many editing tools through which it is possible to chop and change your photos.

Record your precious moments for digital prosperity with this 5 mega pixel digital camera with huge 3.6 inch screen. Powerful digital cameras offers you three different mega pixel sizes to choose from and can shoot video at DVD Quality of up to 720×480 pixels! The 10 megapixel Canon SD890 has been upgraded with the longest zoom ever on an elph camera. Upgraded to a full 5x optical zoom. Video resolutions in still cameras (and most camcorders) are well under 1 megapixel. They’re described in terms of the number of horizontal by vertical pixels captured: A 640×480 video frame is 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels high.

By making the 6 megapixel line incredibly feature rich and easy to use, Sony has created cameras that are perfect for both digital beginners and seasoned digital users. These cameras incorporate high optical zoom, auto and manual focus options, and various lens compatibility, which sets them apart from other 6 MP cameras on the market.

Image Stabilisation is enabled for both image stills and movies and files can be recorded to the ever convenient SD/SDHC memory cards. These menus are also where you can turn on the image stabilization mode. Available features include optical and digital zoom, movie mode (some with audio), special image effects, and many other options that can keep novice and experienced photographers alike very happy.

On the road, record up to four minutes of video and audio before downloading to your hard drive; at your PC, keep on filming or snapping away until your hard drive runs out of space. There’s even software included that features animation, video and audio editing, text and credits, music tracks, e-mail and playback tools. It has an inbuilt microphone and stores the audio in AAC-LC (MPEG-4 audio) format. The movie camera features a dynamic 5x optical zoom lens, making it more convenient to capture distant objects.

The Sanyo Xacti DMX-HD800 is a sleek and fashion forward digital movie camera that can take both high definition stills and videos. Giving you the ability to take either high definition videos in 1280 x 720 resolution and photos in 8 megapixels, moments are recorded in the finest quality whether you choose to record in video or in image stills. This compact lightweight device will record and play MPEG4 videos, take digital still photos, play your favorite MP3s, serve as a voice recorder, and store your digital data. Watch your movies or view your photos on the 2″ color LCD TFT screen.

To compare HP (Hewlett-Packard) digital cameras, check the compare checkboxes and click on the submit button. There are digital camera comparison charts or camera calculators to further compare digital cameras. Color pixels are taken out of the client’s image, compared and matched to database images of real people’s skin.

As the electronics of picture taking get more complicated, it’s hard to figure a megapixel from a memory card. Some have done the research on digital cameras and camera electronics, offering you helpful digital camera buying guides to sort out the details. It makes you wonder how electronic devices can tell whether a battery is capable of being recharged or not. The MTV generation will be known to have the largest discretionary income ever for consumer electronics, while shaping and influencing the industry for generations to come like no other. And HP’s got them just where they want them.

The company stated that it wants to more heavily focus on the imaging/printing business instead of the imaging hardware business, so there you go. HP will take a $30 million charge in its Q4 period related to the move and added that it will be shifting resources freed up from the market exit to web printing services and digital publishing.

Users simply take a photo and select its destination right on the back of the camera - up to 34 destinations, including e-mail addresses, online albums, printers and more - by simply pushing a button. When the digital camera is later connected to a computer or the optional camera dock, the selected photos are automatically printed and/or e-mailed without burdening friends with large file attachments. It will not overwhelm a beginner, yet it still includes many key features and an intuitive menu system. With this combination of features, usability - the Hewlett Packard Digital Camera is a great choice.

Tipping the scales at 245g without batteries, the camera is light and compact at 95 x 41 x 70mm. It runs on two AA-sized Ni-MH batteries, a feature we appreciated as they offer the best value for money in the long run. The 10MP R967 follows on the heels of the 10MP Casio EX-Z1000, released in April, which was the first compact digital camera to crack the 8MP barrier. Where the HP model eclipses the Casio is in LCD screen size — 3-inches versus 2.8. But it will not be designing or manufacturing its own digital compacts. The two newest HP camera models (and therefore the last to be sold) are the Photosmart R937 and Photosmart R847.

SMaL Camera Technologies, a developer of digital imaging solutions and the enabler of award-winning super-thin digital cameras, announced that it has enabled the FlatFoto digital camera from RadioShack. The 1.3 Megapixel FlatFoto is the second in RadioShack’s series of thin, stylish, easy to use cameras based on SMaL designs. Elastic sides provide a perfect fit to most ultra-thin digital cameras. A belt loop and removable shoulder strap provide convenient carrying options.

Last summer Casio replaced it with the Exilim Z850, which is part of their “Zoom” line of cameras. It looks almost identical, has 8.1 instead of 7.2 megapixel, longer battery life, and costs less. With the footprint of a credit card and a profile skinnier than a pack of Virginia Slims, the Exilim really is teensy (and weighs just over three ounces). As digicams go, it’s pretty smart, featuring six preset shooting modes that eliminate gaffes and guesswork. Still, take one look at the Exilim S500 and then see if you can resist it.

The S560 is the world’s smallest camera in its class, with 10 megapixels, a 5x zoom lens and advanced features such as Smile Mode. Both cameras use Carl Zeiss lens technology and 4x optical zoom along with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. Both cameras will be available in September with the T700 retailing for $400 and the T77 going for $300. The Carl Zeiss lens is capable of 3X optical zoom but it doesn’t protrude from the camera as a zoom lens normally would. That’s because the lens is mounted sideways and is already extended inside the body of the camera with a prism used to reflect light so that the lens can see ahead.

It also has 3x optical zoom, 3″ touch screen LCD display, ISO 1600 and stainless steel body. One of it’s best features is that this camera could recognize your face. The optical setup is kept fully constant offering the advantage of being able to compensate spatial differences in sensitivity. Such compensation can only be performed if a reference is measured with exactly the same settings (focal length and opening of lens) as the actual image. The team is now designing variable-focus folded optical systems that have air between the reflective surfaces of the imager. Such imagers may be especially useful for lightweight, inexpensive infrared vision applications.

If you’re not quite sure what Digital Cameras to buy, be sure to check out helpful customer Buying Guides. The picture was barely discernible, with large digital-artifacts appearing where the software’s compression utility hadn’t quite done its math correctly. The most obvious problem was the lack of motion.

This prototype is going to make up the high end of its line, it has a Nikon sensor and a Pentax lens. What makes it unique is something far more mundane, the lens surround. Other options to consider are the Panasonic FS3 (my personal favorite in this price range) and the the Nikon Coolpix S210. The FS3 is probably the best of the group in low light, but all are solid all-around cameras and should meet your requirements otherwise in terms of price, memory, etc.

If you’re in the market for a PowerShot SD850 IS ELPH Digital Camera, we will show you where the best prices are and aren’t. How may we help you? Make an informed decision on canon powershot sd750 digital elph Digital Cameras before you buy.

I also have a Kodak DC240, which takes 1280×800 pictures at 500k which look as good as the Elph’s 1.5MB resolution. The big winning point with the Elph is the true “pocket” size. And it takes really great pictures and video too! I’ve been very impressed with the features as well — so many!

Now, you don’t even have to worry about camera shake getting in the way of perfect pictures. So you can create images that are sharp, clear and bright - just like you want them to be. Since an equivalent camera can be bought new for $250 (with a new warranty) and we kinda wanted something with better picture quality, we opted not to bother repairing that old camera. I haven’t seen a single blurred picture out of all the pictures I’ve taken so far.

Canon’s lens shift OIS provides an effective antidote to camera shake, particularly at longer zoom lengths or during long exposures when even the slightest hand-held shake is magnified to picture blurring proportions. Superior to electronic image stabilization systems that simply use software to mask movement, OIS actually shifts the lens proportionately to compensate for unwanted motion, making it easier to snap great images and smooth movies, even when the camera is hand-held or in low light conditions. Canon pioneered the stylish camera concept in 1996 with the first ELPH camera, an APS film model designed to take great pictures and fit stylishly into the consumer lifestyle. With each PowerShot Digital ELPH camera that Canon introduces, the company continues to focus on style, fashion and the distinctive look and feel of the ELPH line, a look that many competitors have often imitated, but never duplicated. This makes your pictures as sharp as possible, even in low light or using the long telephoto lens. The SD-870 has 8.0 megapixels of shooting power coupled with a new high resolution 3.0 inch LCD (230,000 pixels) with wider viewing angles.

Taken at a low resolution, that part of the picture will look so pixelated that you’d think you were staring at one of your son’s Lego projects. With more, smaller pixels, that same piece of the shot will stand a better chance of looking like its target. The processor enhances picture definition, vibrancy and quality, while helping increase the speed of the cameras’ startup, autofocus, shutter response, playback and image processing speed and reducing power consumption by 35 percent compared to the original DIGIC chip. Image transfer speed is accelerated (when used with a USB 2.0 compatible computer, printer or other peripheral), thanks to the inclusion of a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. You can send pictures from the camera to a computer, either directly in a peer-to-peer link or to a computer on an existing Wi-Fi network. You can send pictures to a printer, either directly to one equipped with a wireless adapter, or to a printer attached to a PC with which you’ve established a wireless connection.
